SONICA EKRANO returns to Barreiro and expands to Lisbon. The fourth edition of the Music Documentary Film Festival organized by OUT.RA takes place from April 11 to 19 and brings dozens of Portuguese premieres.
SONICA EKRANO is a documentary film festival dedicated to the music, musicians, sounds and movements at the edges of massification and popularity, allowing access to exceptional films portraying artists, sounds, local and global movements, which often slip through the cracks of the wide variety of audiovisual media on offer in our present day - because history is still often created away from the spotlights of the media - in the present as in the past, where these histories sometimes lay dormant for decades until their (re)discovery.
The fourth edition of the festival provides an opportunity to watch cinematic works that - even in this era of digital platforms - remain difficult to access, contributing to a greater audiovisual inclusion by considering geographical diversity and balancing historical perspectives with contemporary narratives.
The name SONICA EKRANO, which means “Sound Screen” in Esperanto, seeks to reflect music and cinema as “universal languages” while simultaneously paying tribute to the strong Esperantist tradition on both sides of the Tagus River, particularly in Barreiro and Lisbon, which will host the festival from April 11 to 19.
Over the course of 33 sessions, divided between ADAO, the Cineclube do Barreiro, and Casa do Comum, we present 23 films, eleven of which - each making its national premiere - will be part of a Competitive Section for the first time in the festival's history, with the winner being decided by the audience.
The 2025 program, which includes the competitive section, special selections, and short films (also debuting at SONICA EKRANO this year), allows us to explore several thematic threads: improvisation, the deep bonds of friendship associated with making music, the role of migrant communities and individuals, the relationship between music and (dis)ability, and dance as a form of political expression.
The opening and closing parties, concerts and listening parties also return - not that cinema isn’t, in itself, a celebration, but a festival dedicated entirely to music clearly deserves to celebrate it in communion.

SONICA EKRANO regressa ao Barreiro e estende-se a Lisboa. A quarta edição do festival de Documentário Musical organizado pela OUT.RA decorre de 11 a 19 de Abril e traz dezenas de estreias nacionais.
Este é um festival de cinema documental dedicado a músicas, músicos, sons e movimentos nas margens da massificação e da popularidade, providenciando acesso a filmes excepcionais que retratam artistas, sons e movimentos locais e globais que tantas vezes passam por entre os interstícios da ampla oferta audiovisual dos nossos dias - porque continua a ser longe dos holofotes mediáticos que tantas vezes se vai criando a história, tanto no presente como em passados que, por vezes, demoram décadas a ser (re)conhecidos.
A quarta edição do festival oferece um espaço de oportunidade para assistir a obras cinematográficas às quais – mesmo na era das plataformas digitais – o acesso é limitado, num contributo mais em prol da inclusão audiovisual, atendendo à diversidade geográfica e ao equilíbrio entre perspectivas históricas e narrativas contemporâneas.
O nome SONICA EKRANO, que significa, em esperanto, “Tela de Som”, procura reflectir a música e o cinema enquanto “linguagens universais”, homenageando simultaneamente a forte tradição esperantista em ambas as margens do Tejo, em particular no Barreiro e em Lisboa, que acolhem o festival entre os dias 11 e 19 de Abril.
Ao longo de 33 sessões, divididas entre a ADAO, o Cineclube do Barreiro e Casa do Comum, apresentamos 23 filmes, dos quais onze, todos em estreia nacional, integram uma Secção Competitiva, pela primeira vez na história do festival - com o vencedor a ser decidido pelo público.
O programa de 2025, considerando quer a secção competitiva, quer as selecções especiais quer as curtas-metragens (que também este ano se estreiam no SONICA EKRANO) possibilita pensar em alguns fios temáticos: a improvisação, as profundas ligações de amizade associadas ao fazer Música, o lugar das comunidades e indivíduos migrantes, a problemática da Música e (d)eficiência, ou a dança como manifestação política.
Regressam também as festas de abertura e encerramento, os concertos e as sessões de escuta colectiva - não que o cinema não seja, em si, uma festa, mas um festival dedicado por inteiro à Música merece evidentemente celebrá-la em comunhão…
