'One' is the debut album from talented Portuguese producer Afonso Esperança aka Backbone.
Exploring the modern techno paradigm, 'One' is full of positively charged, bassline-driven heaters. The founder of the Vinculum Festival in Mondim de Basto, Portugal, Esperança's unique sound design, vocal FX and tension-heavy arrangements carve a clear course from the heart to the dancefloor. From the tingling ambient intro of 'Mundo Novo' straight into the addictive 'Press To Regenerate' its clear there's countless details to discover forged into these tracks.
Counterchange founder Inland straps in on 'Generation Gap', one of the early highlights of the album, with its surging industrial pulse and funky forward momentum.
The stunning broken beats and bleeps of 'There Is No Spoon' hit hard and dark while remaining elegant and certainly not over-driven. Every track on the LP is a microcosm of Backbone's kinetic techno manifesto - he infuses a rich stereo image, textured crunch and silky bass-end bounce on stand-out tracks like 'Strike A Dose', 'Minucioso' and 'No Casket Space'.
Bringing the album to a close with the night-time drive of 'Ride The Snake', Backbone summons the spirits of his mountainous home region in a hypnotising, shamanic ritual for the closing sets.

'One' é o álbum de estreia do talentoso produtor português Afonso Esperança aka Backbone.
Explorando o paradigma do techno moderno, “One” está repleto de cargas positivas, com linhas de baixo a aquecer. Fundador do Festival Vinculum em Mondim de Basto, Portugal, o design de som único de Esperança, os efeitos vocais e os arranjos de tensão pesada traçam um percurso claro do coração para a pista de dança. Desde a introdução ambiente de “Mundo Novo” até à viciante “Press To Regenerate”, é evidente que há inúmeros pormenores a descobrir nestas faixas.
O fundador do Counterchange, Inland, entra em “Generation Gap”, um dos primeiros destaques do álbum, com a sua pulsação industrial e o seu impulso funky.
As impressionantes batidas quebradas e os bleeps de “There Is No Spoon” são fortes e sombrios, mas permanecem elegantes e certamente não excessivos. Todas as faixas do LP são um microcosmo do manifesto techno cinético de Backbone - ele infunde uma imagem estéreo rica, um crunch texturizado e um baixo sedoso em faixas como 'Strike A Dose', 'Minucioso' e 'No Casket Space'.
Ao encerrar o álbum com a condução nocturna de “Ride The Snake”, Backbone convoca os espíritos da sua região montanhosa num ritual hipnotizante e xamânico para os sets de encerramento.
